A new survey commissioned by Blenheim Palace has revealed that nearly one in five (19%) British viewers of period dramas have binge-watched for five hours or more in a single sitting. The Ipsos poll, which surveyed over 2,000 adults aged 16 to 75, highlights a growing enthusiasm for historical narratives within the UK.
The survey also found that a significant 71% of respondents are drawn to period dramas primarily for their historic locations. Almost two-thirds (65%) of viewers reported watching these shows to gain insights into the past. This fascination with history aligns well with Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has been prominently featured in various period dramas, including Netflix and Shondaland’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. The palace served as a stunning backdrop for key scenes in the show, set at Buckingham House.
To further engage fans of period dramas, Blenheim Palace has introduced the Lights, Camera, Action! Trail. This attraction allows visitors to explore behind-the-scenes insights into some of the most renowned films that have used the palace as a filming location, including blockbusters such as Harry Potter, James Bond, The BFG, and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation.
In addition to its connection to popular dramas, Blenheim Palace is currently showcasing costumes from Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, available for viewing from September 11 to November 5, 2023. The palace offers a plethora of tours and activities that immerse visitors in over 300 years of rich history. It also has historical ties to Queen Charlotte and King George III, who were close friends of the 4th Duke and Duchess of Marlborough.
Further findings from the survey indicate that 31% of British adults aged 16 to 75 watch period dramas. Gender disparities are evident, with 42% of women indulging in the genre compared to just 20% of men. Among those aged 16-34, nearly two in five (39%) agree that period dramas have shaped their expectations of romance. Geographically, period dramas are most popular in Greater London, where 36% of respondents enjoy them, followed closely by Wales and the North West, both at 35%.
Heather Carter, Managing Director at Blenheim Palace, expressed delight in the strong connection between real-life history and period dramas. “It’s great that we have such a strong connection with both real-life history and period dramas,” she stated. “This allows visitors and fans to go behind the scenes and learn more about monarchs, both factual and fictional.”
