The Institute of Black Imagination: A Space for Transformation and Cultural Alchemy

Introduction to the Institute

The Institute of Black Imagination (I.B.I.), housed in the Oculus at the World Trade Center PATH station, is a transformative cultural space that challenges traditional notions of retail and creativity. What was once a typical store, Space 001, has been repurposed as a hub for Black culture, innovation, and education. The institute provides free public access to an extensive archive of books, periodicals, and record albums focused on Black culture, serving as a platform for innovative Black designers and thinkers. It also hosts events, including personal appearances by creators, fostering a space for dialogue and inspiration. Founded by Dario Calmese, a renowned creative director, photographer, and artist, the institute is a nonprofit that officially opened in October 2024. Its mission is to democratize access to knowledge, creativity, and conversation, particularly for Black and Brown communities.
